Helping
others lose weight is the most important thing to me. Why?
Because of what happened in my
own
life.
Let me tell you my story:
I was
always the fat
kid in school.
I come from a family where people tend to be heavy. My grandfather was
a big man. He wasn’t really fat, but he was big. They called
him “hip”
(which was short for hippopotamus.)
And his kids all tended to be big, and the grandkids too. Many of us in
my family have had trouble with our weight.
I grew up in a household where there
were always cookies and candy and
dessert. There was dessert after every meal. My mom always
baked
cookies and cakes. It was her way of showing that she loved us, and I
wanted to show her I loved her (and loved her cookies!) so I ate them
by the ton.
When the other kids in 3rd grade weighed 60 pounds I weighed 130. I had
to shop in the men’s section or wear
“husky”.
I was picked on by the older boys. I was as big as them, but I was
younger and immature.
All the kids teased me. They
called
me fatty fatty two by four. Have
you ever heard that? It comes from a children’s rhyme they
use to tease
the fat kids:
Fatty fatty two by four
Can’t get through the bathroom door
So he went on the floor
Licked it up and went some more.
I had total strangers insult me. I was at Sears with my mother one time
and a salesman pointed at me and told a customer, “He
hasn’t lost all
his baby fat yet.” It may not sound so bad, but it made me
feel awful.
My own
sister was
embarrassed to be seen with me.
Girls would puff out their cheeks at me to mock my fat face.
One time a guy in gym class in high school asked me, “How
much do you
weigh?” He was one of those lean, wiry types that all the
girls fall
for.
“About 230,” I answered. I really weighed 236
pounds but all fat people
lie about their weight.
He just shook his head. “No offense,” he said.
“But I couldn’t handle
that.”
My
mother was always
heavy and always struggled with her weight. She
would join one group after another. She joined Weight Watchers, TOPS,
etc. etc. She joined one after the other. She took weight off and put
it back on. Gain and lose. Off and on. The famous yo-yo dieting.
She would use every diet that came out. The grapefruit diet. The
Beverly Hills diet. Most of them worked for a little while. But then
she would gain it back.
She was preoccupied
with her
weight. She worried
about it
all the time.
She went to gyms and did flab
rollers.
These are the machines that have
big rollers that rub up and down and are supposed to rub away the fat.
She did the body
wraps that wrap you up and try
to squeeze the fat away.
She tried hypnosis and
aversion
therapy. Aversion therapy is where they
make you do something so much that it makes you sick, and then you are
supposed to stop doing it. With cigarettes they make you smoke a whole
package of cigarettes non-stop. With overeating they make you eat Oreos
until you feel like you are going to throw up.
She wore girdles and
support hose
and who knows what else.
None of
it really
worked.
I tried diets too. The summer after 8th grade I went on a diet and lost
35 pounds.
The next year I gained
40 pounds.
I couldn’t run
in gym class.
My baseball shirt was so small in Little League that I
couldn’t get it
on. I had to stretch it and stretch it and finally somehow it would
sort of fit.
The
girls
laughed at me.
My pants were so tight that I had to lie on the bed on my back with my
stomach sucked in to button them. Then the girls laughed at me
for
wearing stretch pants.
Fast forward to now:
Last night at the hospital one of the nurses asked if I wanted some the
junk food they put out, and when I said no thanks (I just
wasn’t
hungry) she said, “That’s
why you’re
so thin.”
Two days ago one of my patients said to me, “You and your
wife like to stay lean
like I do.”
A couple weeks ago at the hospital where I teach one of the young
doctors was describing a patient to another doctor. The other doctor
asked what the man looked like. “He
looked fit,” he said, pointing to
me, “Like Dr. Curtis.”
You know how bad I felt when I was “fatty fatty two by
four?”
Can
you
imagine how good I feel now?
What happened? How did I go from the fat kid to being lean and fit and
healthy?
Wouldn’t you like to know

Let me tell you something. I’ll
bet you
don’t know very many people who
were fat and who lost the weight.
I mean really lost the weight -- took it
off and kept it off. Not very many people do. In fact you might think
it is impossible. You might think you can’t do it. But I did,
and you
can too. I know that for sure.
Lots
of people
lose weight
for a while. But then it
creeps back
up. How
many people do you know that were fat and took it off and kept it off
forever?
You probably don’t know too many. You may not know anyone who
lost
weight and kept it off
forever.
It is very rare. Most people just don’t
know how to do it. But I
did it.
It took me a while but I figured out
what to do and I did it.
But you know a lot of fat people, that’s for sure. Tons of
fat people.
Everywhere you look its fat people!
At work, at the office, in stores,
in restaurants, in the streets.
Even the gym is full of fat people! It is full of people who are there
week after week and they are still fat. What is going on?!! Well, I can
tell you.
I figured out what is going on, and why so many people are overweight.
It took some doing, but I did it.
Why are
you fat?
Wouldn’t you like to know? And wouldn’t you like to
know what to do about it?
Well, I can tell you this for sure:
- It’s not because of
lack of willpower.
- It’s not because you
eat like a pig.
- It’s not because you
are weak.
Ask yourself these
questions:
Are you
tired of
being fat?
Are
you suffering
from being overweight?

you in despair
about not being able to take
off the excess weight
and keep it off?

it ruining

problem
you just can’t seem to solve?

Here’s a true story:
Dean
came to my
office a few weeks ago feeling
sluggish.
He was overweight
and out of shape.
He was having trouble with kidney stones.
He
was
frequently in pain,
he was tired,
and he just felt miserable.
I gave him a couple of suggestions, not a complete program, but just a
couple of specific suggestions that he could use.
I
didn’t tell
him to diet. (He’s heard that before.)
I
didn’t
tell him to give up the foods he loves. (He
wouldn’t do it

I
didn’t tell him he has to go hungry. (Nobody
goes hungry when
there
is food around. Nobody!)
I just gave him a couple of small suggestions. Just a couple of small
changes that I knew he could do. (Do you know
how often
people are told to do things that they can’t do when they are
trying to
lose weight?)
Here’s the usual
advice:

Go on a diet.
-
Eat a salad.
-
Give up the dessert.
-
Use some willpower.
Right? You’ve heard it all
before.
I’ve got to tell you that when I hear this nonsense I get fired
up! Eat a salad. Well, I like salad as much as the next person, but
when I’m hungry, I want some chow! I’m not a rabbit!
And skip dessert? There’s an old joke about giving up wine,
women and
song. They
say you’ll live longer, but who’d want to?
Well, it’s the same with food. They say, “You
remember the pasta mama
used to make. Now listen, you
can’t
eat any more pasta, and you’ll just
drop the pounds, and you’ll be all skinny! And
that’s all you have to
do?” Give up the pasta you love? Forever? I don’t
think so!
How about Turkey stuffing on Thanksgiving. Can you give that up?
“No
stuffing for me,” you say.
“I’m on a diet.” Is that how you want
to
live? I don’t think so!
You could give up all
the foods you
love, and you might lose weight,
but you’d be miserable. It just wouldn’t be worth
it.
So anyway, I gave my patient Dean a couple of pointers, a little
guidance to get him on track a little bit.
I didn’t tell
him to go hungry,
because that won’t work. Are you going to go hungry? I didn't
think so.
And I didn’t tell him lots of other things that would be too
hard for
him. I just gave him a little guidance.
These were just small changes, really, but I identified the most
important things for him to do (not for somebody else but for him
specifically) and I sent him on his way.
You know what
happened?
Well, he showed up in my office a few weeks later and I hardly
recognized him. Forget the fact that he dropped 29 pounds.
Forget the fact that he had a new wardrobe because his old clothes fell
off of him.
He had a big smile on his face. He had a spring in his step. He was
feeling healthier than he had in a long time. He was a new man!
How did this happen?
Because he just took a couple of the principles I use and completely
turned his life around! That’s all.
He took a couple of my tiny suggestions (no, it didn’t
include starving
himself or unusual diets—those are for the birds!!) And he
used these
suggestions, and really the way he told it to me it was like magic. The
weight just dropped away.
And there he was happy as a lark!
That's all it took!
And it can work

Don't be fooled...
